ROMAN OLESZKO Roman passed away peacefully on October 4, 2008, at St. Boniface General Hospital with family and friends at his side and in his heart. He is survived by his loving wife Steffie of 51 years and daughters Julie (son-in-law Roger) and Brenda (Patrick). He will be sadly missed by his brother Wladyslaw (Walter) and sister-in-law Wanda, brother-in-law Walter and sister-in-law Anne, mother-in-law Mary, and his many nieces and nephews. Roman was born in Izdebki, Poland and leaves behind his sisters Helcia and Janka, sister-in-law Janka and their families and was predeceased by his brother Genek, his mother Zofia and his father Franciszek. He left Poland in 1945 to work in Germany and serve with a branch of the U.S. Army Services. In 1948, he arrived in Canada, where he worked as a labourer prior to settling in Winnipeg. He worked in the Public Markets for 38 years where he was known as Romee . He became a member of the Sokol #2 and Branch 246 of the Royal Canadian legion where he was an active member of the executive, entertainment coordinator, and bartender. Roman is remembered by all those who met him as a happy gentle man who was sensitive, kind and giving. He was known in his neighborhood for his immense and bountiful garden which he shared with all. He had a ready smile and made friends everywhere he went. He loved life, his family, helping people, working with his hands, his pets, the Blue Bombers, soup, strawberry sundaes, nature and family outings. He always said that Canada was the best place to live in the world. Later in life, Roman persevered to maintain his mobility in spite of the challenges he faced due to arthritis. Our deep appreciation is extended to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital B5 Unit for their compassion and care. A service will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. at Saint Andrew Bobola, 541 Marion Street. Whether near or apart, he is always in our hearts. Ty zawsze bedzies z nami.
